Bomb Scare
Everyone is Acting Normal Challenge

It was 2027, and the world never thought it would happen. A missle hit the United States, but it wasn't where they had anticipated. A little town in the northeast was hit by a missile strike, they didn't know why, and they didn't know exactly where it hit, but they did know it was a coastal community, somewhere between Maine and Delaware.
Air Raid siren blared, and fighter jets scrambled from New Jersey, Delaware, and Virginia, and North Carolina and the sky looked like a flock of geese heading south for the Winter. The fighter planes flew low, like they were looking below for something.
Yet, the message was slow getting out. People didn't rush, at the strange, blaring sound, instead they just mosied down the isle of the grocery store. If they would have known the seriousness of the situation, they would have stopped at the water isle and grabbed a few more cases.
Traffic moved slowly down the highway, and they paid little attention to the blaring sound, it was if the world was deaf, on the northeast part of the United States.
People were at work, for it hit in broad daylight, which was unexpected, about 2:00pm, eastern standard time. Washington DC, and President Trump and his security advisors were caught off guard. They thought that the capital, New York City, or Los Angeles,California would be the most likelly targets for a missile attack. Not some small town, on the East Coast. This puzzled Washington and the Department of War, formally the Department of Defense, and they thought the missle surely got off course.
Things were unstable in the world, previously, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the bombing of Iran by the United States and Isreal, and the fighting between Thailand and Cambodia, and the other unrests in the world. The US soldiers killed at the base in Kuwait, all ended up adding to the world unrest. That could account for the lack-a-daisy attitude of people ignoring the blaring sound that could wake up the dead, so to speak.
The teachers were all huddled together whispering, yet their faces had a look on them that was undeniable. If the whispers are any indication of fear than you couldn't tell it by the way they were smiling at each other. It was just another Wednesday, at the school.
The story is ongoing - the strike is on the New Jersey shore line, and I heard the teachers say, a missile got off course, surely, and how many people were hurt? They treated it as if it were just a wild fire, that New Jersey often had, and how many people were hurt?
School is letting out early today, and they seemed irratated, not scared at the possibility of the missile strike. However, they did seem annoyed at having to wait with the children whose parents were late picking them up.
Another strike in Los Angelos, and this was the game changer. It was one of the cities that were on the list, of the most likely cities to be hit, by a foreign missile. This got a reaction, but not what you would have thought. The teachers were blaming the military and the government for not intercepting the missles, and for stirring things up in the world.
Teachers loading the children into the parents cars. No one was to ride the bus. Yet, the parents remained calm and irritated at having to come to school to pick up their children. Still, everyone remained calm, no one rushing, and yet the sirens continued to blare.
The fighter planes continued to swarm, but other than the occasional pointing, no one payed any attention to the activity in the sky. Perhaps they were used to the airplanes circling above, or perhaps they were so pre-occupied with their own lives, that they couldn't see the forest for the trees. People in the United States were complacent, and never thought war could hit their country. Other than 9-11, or so it was most famously called, no other country has ever touched the United States.
Still everyone went about their own business. When the missile hit Las Angelos, finally people who were slow to pick up the pace, down the grocery aisle, and they could be heard saying, "That siren is deafening, I wish they would turn it off or down."
People were calling on their cell phones, "Did you hear about the missile that hit New Jersey and California? Must have been a missile that got off course. They dismissed the kids early from school."
Still the people in the United States of America, were not alarmed, or frightened. Was it a case of complacency, or an ability to ignore?

Very interesting concept. It really makes you think about how people respond to crisis situations.
You know what, I wouldn't be surprised if it actually turns out to be this way. Loved your take on this challenge!
