The Note
A Story Every Day in 2024 September 9th 253/366
I had a letter this morning stuck through the letterbox. It read:
I just want you to know that I forgive you.
No signature. Blank envelope. Just those words.
Receiving something like this surely gets you examining your conscience, mindful of past trangressions. I scoured my memories, looking for clues. But I came up with nothing.
It troubled me though, nonetheless.
I decided to discuss it with Don when he got back from work. We had no secrets.
"What do you make of this?" I asked, showing him the note.
His face blanched.
Perhaps we did have secrets after all.

Another Drabble today as I am really up against it timewise at the moment. So many demands. Hoping that once the back-to-school thing has calmed down again, I can get back to more than 100 words. I am enjoying these though!

I don't know where I am. Smoke rises around me. I'm strapped, seated but I'm in the open air. Blue sky. I can hear crackling, something's burning. And birds. "Everything is so... flat." Denille said stupidly as she looked around her new neighborhood. She looked around at the muted desert where even the smallest sign of life seemed to have given up. The plant life was shrubs that were half cooked by the heat and where there should have been a lawn, a mess of white rocks laid glistening in the sun. Even the sky looked stretched thin, like the sun had ironed it smooth. She’d moved from Riverside, where at least there were hills, but here in Barstow, everything felt baked and brittle.

"Jesus Murphy," Lisa muttered plunging her fork into her fruit bowl, "He's doing it again." I didn't need to look. The hairs on the back of my neck had stiffened the second I heard the neighbor's sliding door. The routine had become familiar: the rustle of curtains, the flapping of flip-flops on concrete, and then – the inevitable slow, but deliberate swiveling of an atavistic head.
