This is the world’s most heavily secured convoy. Part 2
world’s most heavily secured convoy

To handle this challenge, the U.S. government has created a dedicated agency whose sole job is to secure nuclear weapons. The military convoys you see are commonly used to transport nuclear weapons within the U.S. At first glance, such a convoy looks even more secure than that of a VIP—security an ordinary person can hardly imagine.
The size of the convoy varies depending on the size of the weapon and its destination. Police vehicles clear traffic on busy roads. Between these police vehicles are the actual convoy vehicles—armored trucks driving side by side at a fixed distance. These armored vehicles, often called “BearCats,” are far more than just bulletproof. Each armored vehicle carries four to six federal agents whose job is to protect the convoy and launch immediate counterattacks if necessary.
These vehicles have firing ports that allow agents to shoot from inside. The agents are highly trained commandos equipped with handguns, shotguns, assault rifles, and millions of rounds of ammunition. In extreme situations, automatic machine guns can also be mounted on top.
During transport, agents monitor every detail and share information constantly. All vehicles are connected by radio using three separate channels. One channel is used for coordination during an attack, another for routine convoy updates, and additional vehicles positioned ahead relay situation reports. Communication is divided across channels so that even if one frequency is jammed or the main convoy is attacked, others can still call for help.
The convoy is also constantly connected to an emergency control center. In case of an emergency, the control center immediately arranges backup forces. Whether the backup is police or military, both forces are authenticated through encrypted radio links and secret code words before trusting each other—preventing attackers from posing as law enforcement.
The truck carrying the nuclear weapon itself is no ordinary vehicle. It is fully customized for this purpose. Its body is made of hardened steel that cannot be cut by normal tools, drills, or grinders, and it does not crack even in severe accidents. Even if exposed to fire, it can protect the nuclear weapon inside for hours. The driver’s cabin is bullet- and bomb-proof, and its doors can only be opened from the inside.
One downside of this strength is weight—the truck can weigh around 25,000 kg, making it slower and less maneuverable. But this weakness hides another security feature: if attackers somehow seize the truck and try to move it, explosives on the axles will detonate, separating the wheels and dropping the truck to the ground. Without wheels, moving such a heavy vehicle becomes impossible.
As for the nuclear weapon inside, even the convoy agents do not have access to the container. It is secured with electronic locks whose keys are held only by the National Nuclear Security Administration. If someone somehow forces entry, an automatic spray gun releases a thick, sticky substance that severely restricts movement, followed by a powerful electric shock far stronger than household electricity.
Throughout the journey, helicopters constantly monitor the convoy. When one helicopter runs low on fuel, others replace it. These helicopters carry backup forces ready to go to any extreme to protect the weapon.
Because of all these security measures, the world’s most dangerous weapons are extremely unlikely to fall into the wrong hands—at least in the U.S. Thousands of nuclear weapon transports have taken place in American history, and not a single convoy has ever been lost.
