Michigan Synagogue Attack: Suspect Identified as FBI Investigates Targeted Violence Against Jewish Community
A suspect identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali attacked Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The FBI is investigating the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.

A frightening attack at a synagogue in Michigan has triggered a major federal investigation after authorities said an armed suspect rammed his vehicle into a building before being fatally shot by security personnel.
The incident occurred at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, one of the largest Jewish congregations in the Detroit metropolitan area.
Officials say the suspect, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, was killed after carrying out the assault. Federal investigators are now treating the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Despite the severity of the attack, authorities confirmed that no worshippers or children inside the synagogue were killed or seriously injured.
What Happened at Temple Israel
According to local law enforcement, the suspect drove a vehicle into the synagogue building Thursday while carrying a rifle.
Authorities say Ghazali breached the structure by ramming his vehicle into the building and then drove through a hallway inside the synagogue.
Security personnel at the synagogue quickly confronted the suspect and fatally shot him before the situation escalated further.
Officials credit the synagogue’s security team with preventing what could have become a mass casualty event.
Temple Israel later confirmed on social media that everyone inside the building was safe, including the children attending the facility’s daycare center.

140 Children Inside Daycare Center During Attack
One of the most alarming aspects of the incident was the presence of children inside the building.
Temple Israel operates an early childhood education center on its campus, where 140 children were present during the attack.
Teachers and staff immediately followed emergency safety protocols and kept the children calm while security handled the threat.
Authorities praised the staff and security team for their quick response.
“No kids, no staff were injured whatsoever,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said during a press conference.
Fire and Smoke Injure First Responders
The suspect’s vehicle caught fire after crashing into the building, creating heavy smoke that complicated emergency response efforts.
As firefighters and law enforcement officers rushed into the building to contain the situation, many were exposed to smoke.
Officials said approximately 30 first responders were hospitalized with smoke inhalation, though most injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
One member of the synagogue’s security team was also injured after being struck by the suspect’s vehicle during the confrontation.
Suspect Identified as Lebanese-Born U.S. Citizen
Authorities later identified the suspect as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon.
According to reports, Ghazali immigrated to the United States in 2011 and obtained U.S. citizenship in 2016.
Investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind the attack.
However, some reports indicate that Ghazali may have recently experienced personal tragedy after several members of his family were reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.
Officials caution that the investigation remains ongoing, and it is too early to determine whether those events directly influenced the attack.

FBI Investigating Possible Hate Crime
The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation and says it is examining the attack as a potential hate-driven act of violence.
Jennifer Runyan, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit field office, told reporters that the agency is investigating the incident as “a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.”
However, she also urged the public to remain patient while investigators gather more evidence.
“We know everyone wants answers,” Runyan said. “But this investigation is still in its early stages.”
Authorities are analyzing the suspect’s weapon, vehicle, and digital activity to determine whether he had connections to extremist ideology or acted alone.
Massive Law Enforcement Response
The attack triggered a massive emergency response from multiple agencies.
Local police, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and federal agents quickly flooded the area around the synagogue.
Specialists from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives were also deployed to examine the suspect’s weapon and investigate the fire inside the building.
Bomb technicians and explosives experts were brought in as a precaution to ensure no additional threats remained inside the suspect’s vehicle.
Jewish Communities Across the U.S. Increase Security
Following the attack, Jewish institutions across the country took precautionary measures.
Several synagogues in the Detroit area temporarily went into lockdown while police secured the scene.
Authorities in cities including New York and Washington, D.C., increased patrols around Jewish schools, synagogues, and cultural centers.
Community leaders say the incident highlights the growing concern about antisemitic violence in the United States.
Leaders Condemn the Attack
Political leaders across Michigan quickly condemned the attack.
Gretchen Whitmer released a statement expressing support for the Jewish community.
“Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,” Whitmer said.
“Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan.”
U.S. senators from Michigan also spoke out, emphasizing the importance of protecting religious freedom and condemning hate-driven violence.
Security Measures May Have Prevented a Tragedy
Temple leaders say the synagogue had recently strengthened its security procedures amid rising concerns about antisemitic threats nationwide.
Rabbi Josh Bennett previously said the synagogue was working closely with local law enforcement to improve safety measures.
Those preparations may have made a critical difference during Thursday’s attack.
Security personnel were able to confront the suspect quickly and stop the threat before worshippers or children were harmed.
Investigation Continues
Federal and local authorities continue to investigate the attack.
Officials are examining the suspect’s background, possible online activity, and any connections to extremist groups.
For now, the focus remains on understanding what motivated the attack and preventing similar incidents in the future.
Although the event was terrifying, many community members say they are grateful that quick action from security personnel prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy.
