Broken Wings

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished about an hour ago 2 min read

Verse 1

Horizontal scars run up and down her arms,

Defining how she learned to calm her storms.

She used to move through life with a determined stride,

But now she keeps her shoulders low so you can't see her cry

Verse 2

Her voice once soothed you when truth felt more like fear

A soft and steady sound you thought you’d always hear.

But whiskey took her softness, and left it rough and low,

It was the only way to dull the hurt she never wanted you to know

Chorus

Her broken wings can no longer lift her from the earth,

Your locked cage keeps her from rising to her truth.

She’s covered in the scars you were never meant to see,

Your angel is worn down fighting to be free.

Her broken wings ache for open air,

But every time she tries to fly, there’s simply nothing there.

Her broken wings can no longer lift her from the earth,

Verse 3

You say you want the love she once gave freely long ago,

But love won’t breathe when someone tells it where to go.

You held her too close and called it keeping her from pain,

Not seeing how your grip became another link in the chain

Bridge

Her dress is stained from walking through your muddy ground,

Her spirit sagging from the weight she is dragging around.

You tried to keep her safe by never letting go,

But safety isn’t love when it refuses to let her to grow,

Chorus (repeat)

Her broken wings can no longer lift her from the earth,

Your locked cage keeps her from rising to her truth.

She’s covered in the scars you were never meant to see,

Your angel is worn down fighting to be free.

Her broken wings ache for open air,

But every time she tries to fly, there’s simply nothing there.

Her broken wings can no longer lift her from the earth,
