Clipped Wings

Anxiety.

Shaken by the sound of my own voice

I could be hung by judgment

Lynched by shame

Everyone is flying but my wings are clipped

Notice how I flinch every time my mouth is open?

Curses coat my throat

Everyone speaks as I choke on the words I wish I could say

This is so damn deep and emotionally charged. So succinct too, but yet so devestating. Thank you for sharing it as part of your submissions for the book.

Raw and emotional. I felt those words in my chest! Excellent Poppy!

The way you write this makes it almost visceral, and “Everyone is flying but my wings are clipped” is a powerful metaphor for a feeling that I’m sure more than a few readers can understand.

I can literally feel this one... my lips feel dry, coated by the abrasiveness of anxiety. Your acrostic is very relatable for me! Nicely done!

Your track record with creating final lines that punch so hard and linger afterwards is an impressive one! Fantastic job, Poppy!

Wow. This is really, really good.

  • Well-wrought!

I think this could be read a number of ways, Poppy as it suggests insecurity, malice, frustration. Great stuff.

  • Excellent acrostic… my favourite line is: “ Everyone speaks as I choke on the words I wish I could say”
