Galumphing Back
A Poem for Lewis Carroll

Beware the orange troll, my little lads and lasses,
Lest his eyes fix on your assets, your labor or your asses!
The lips that lie, and hunger for all things
Especially the gold, and all it brings
Within range of his awful appetite
See how it sparkles, like a star at night!

Beware the orange troll, for he will lie and call it truth
Confusion is his home and native land
To find the truth requires a great sleuth
The troll has eaten most out of his hand
The rest no longer recognize their aim
And mistake all of life for a mere game

Beware the orange troll, who will loudly cry in pain
And remain deaf to you, your loss, or glad new gain
The latter he will covet, and begrudge you, angrily
For he weighs wealth and worth both equally
He has one god, his gut; his master, too
He'll take what he can, to have more than you

Beware the orange troll, for he will kill and steal and ravish
He eats the innocent with special relish
He got there first, the filthy, sad monster
He does not recognize the place, punter
His innocence obstructed his gullet
He's a hand who thinks he's an orange puppet

Trolls become bullies very early on
Getting is life to them, shiny things won
They only pretend to think otherwise
But they are ugly, not in some disguise
When your eyes tell you that you see the troll
Doubt them not; your escape had better roll!

But one thing can defeat the orange troll, my lads and lasses
'Tis not some vorpal blade, but what you learn in classes
That teach you how to recognize a troll
And then rob him of power and control
Beneath his bridge, with his gawdy trinkets
He can't be bested, don't even think it

Come daylight though, when every hiding place,
Is made visible by shame and disgrace
If we but trust our eyes, and know him well
We'll drive him from our midst, and back to hell
Where he will no longer be moved to hide
For all who dwell there are on his good side
