She Never Found Her Way Home

She chased the bright lights of London

She Never Found Her Way Home

She left with a small case, and a restless bright heart,

The train pulled away from the quiet green lane.

London was calling with gold in its windows,

And she thought no one there would remember her name.

The village grew silent, the chapel bell waited,

Her mother still watched the long bend in the road.

Letters came first with the thrill of the city,

Then fewer, then none, as the long seasons flowed.

She walked under lights that never grew gentle,

Past laughter and music that lasted till dawn.

Big doors and big rooms wrapped round her like weather,

And slowly the girl from the hillside was gone.

Why would she return to the fields and the hedges,

To one narrow street and a cold little stream.

When London had given her thunder and glitter,

And nights that burned bright like a fevered dream?

Yet somewhere beyond all the noise and the glasses,

A memory stirred of a gate and a tree.

But pride is a road that turns hard as a stone,

home is a door that asks quietly, come back to me.

They say the sorrow slowly killed her parents,

She was their only child, the light of their days.

But she had always wanted something greater,

Beyond the narrow lanes and familiar ways.

It was only a small village, quiet and waiting,

So she aimed for the height of a glittering throne.

She followed the roar and the promise of London,

And there in its bright restless heart made her home.
