A Potpourri of Songs
********************************************************************** It was my maternal grandmother that loved Perry Como. He was popular from the late 1930's on through and well past the 1960's, having thirteen #1 top hits. She was born in 1892, so this makes sense. I liked listening to his music with her. In elementary school music class, we learned this song, Moon River. I remember singing it to her. Dean Martin described Como's voice as "relaxing." I also remember another singer, Andy Williams who was popular in the 60s-70's. He, too sang Moon River. I think I liked his version the best.

A heaping dollop of noisiness from the long-time Japanoise king, Masami Akita, a.k.a. "Merzbow," who has been going since 1978 and has a hundred and forty million albums of this stuff. Here, we have a heavy collage of bang and clang, intercut with high, piercing, synth whistling but it never does in any way get dull. The feeling is that one is inside the bowls of some great, futuristic tin horn beast from a demonic bestiary located somewhere south of Chiba City and somewhere north of the Sprawl. Strings are plucked behind the wall of noise, there is always the sensation of movement...movement...movement forward in sound, a process of progression.

Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii
Pink Floyd gathered in the amphitheater in the ruins of Pompeii in 1972 to film one of the greatest concert films and documentaries of a rock group of the psychedelic era. Set amid the ruins of the devastated ancient city, the camera slides up and down, panning left and right over the painted frescoes and grim mosaics that document the lives and loves of ancient people, providing a sort of glimpse into the fate of beings cut short through the sheer absurdity of catastrophic misfortune. Out of the mercurial swamp of the lave flow of Vesuvius, we have the stuff from which is born, from the burbling earth, a new and more magnificent ruin for which time will still have no pity, no mercy, or no remorse.
