Clark was done with most everything he needed to do with the house, all of his mother's useless knickknacks and smaller pieces of furniture were taken to the thrift shop first thing, then it was back to load his personal stuff onto the pick-up, which included a dirt bike he got at the same time he got the used pickup. By 11:30 he had pulled away from the house for the last time, and was at the hospital morgue right at noon.

There it was. He was trembling with fear at what he might find inside. The sun was beginning to set, and he didn’t see the telltale glow of candles in any of the windows — but then again, if they were smart, there wouldn’t be. And he knew without a doubt that Anne was smart. Charles also saw that the windows looked intact, and with the curtains closed he could make out that someone had screwed plywood up against them as well. Smart.

As his truck lumbered down the gravel path, Charles watched the home he’d shared with Katherine for over a decade dwindle in the rearview mirror, swallowed quickly by the pines and other trees that enveloped the winding path leading down the mountain and away from their secluded sanctuary. As he rumbled down the glorified driveway, he could hear the sounds of work echoing through the forest surrounding their mountaintop home.
