Blackest Day
November 25th, 2022 marked my seventh Black Friday as a retail worker, specifically in the electronics department. You would think after so many years you would just know what do to. How to handle the swarm of people coming into a store with wild eyes ready to drop absurd amounts of money. The rush of transactions right before your very eyes. The call-outs of coworkers, and the hope that the ones beside you can hold on.

This cranky old lady has been pushed over her limit. I have written stories complaining about 35-year-olds who don’t know what a pencil is, cashless banks, and dismal customer service that turns your hair grey and tolls your death knell before your call is answered, but WeOnlyWantYourMoney Airlines has completely destroyed my tolerance level. SNAPPED IT IN HALF. CRACK.

Santa who?
First and foremost, the place where my origins began did not have the luxury of a lovely table spread with tantalizing aromatic, colorful and mouth watering varying conglomeration of foods. If luck favored us and funds allowed, we may have a whole chicken, not just some parts, cooked for the seven, eight, nine or whatever number of mouths that needed feeding at the time. It all depended on whether or not a few extra mouths had been rescued by my mother. She was known for her warmth and kindness. Most homes however, had a back yard garden, so we were able to supplement the lack of meat with home grown vegetables. There was no Christmas tree though, no decking the halls with holly, no caroling or even opening of gifts. We got up early on Christmas morn, ate breakfast, went to church and came home to a warm simple but well balanced delicious meal.

As a child one of my favorite animals was always the seahorse. Ever since I laid eyes on this creature through books and media such as cartoons, they've always been in a special place to my heart. Yes, though they're not on the top of the food chain, unlike the orca, seahorses have always been oddly unique if not mesmerizing.

I’ve been on the internet for several years — when my parents allowed me to play more than just the original Rollercoaster Tycoon with its pixelated NPCs wandering around the map before I flung them to their dooms, I was given the liberal useage to browse the endless slew of websites and social media outlets. I was a child unhinged and ready to strike my way into the world as the next digitized form of sliced bread— however that manifested itself, no matter how it did so. I was also (slightly) disillusioned with the notion of popularity and gaining a cult following.

What it Was Like to be a Supermarket Cashier During the Pandemic
It's a never-ending line of food coming down the conveyer belt. Bodies of people lined up, eagerly and impatiently awaiting it to be their turn. Headcount... time to call for my second cashier. I hear sighs of relief and a stray grumble "finally" as I direct the next customer to lane three to start unloading. Reassuring the crowd that someone is on their way. The line shuffles half its bodies over to lane 3, an angry mob has been averted.
